On the occasion of the Centenary of the Italian Air Force, Dead Pixels was tasked with creating an immersive Virtual Reality experience to commemorate the Decennial Air Cruise that took place in 1933.The main goal of the project was to allow the user to personally relive the exploits of a pilot from that era and experience an important chapter in Italian aviation history aboard the Savoia-Marchetti S.55X seaplane, a symbol of the golden age of flight and the absolute protagonist of the legendary first transatlantic crossing.
With the help of cutting-edge technologies, we digitally reconstructed the places and landscapes that served as the backdrop for the endeavor, specifically the town of Sesto Calende and Lake Lisanza, former locations of the SIAI Marchetti facilities where the legend of the S.55X was born. Following the guidelines left by engineer Marchetti in his construction manual and using various 3D modeling softwares, we faithfully reproduced the aircraft, achieving an unparalleled level of precision and detail while preserving its authenticity and distinctive features. To make the experience even more immersive, numerous photographs from the era were collected and processed, allowing us to virtually bring back to life the protagonists of this historic feat with the aim of guiding the user during the virtual experience.
The result of this intense team effort was showcased during the centenary celebration ceremony of the Italian Air Force, held at the former SIAI-Marchetti facilities in Sesto Calende. The presence of the President of the Lombardy Region, the Managing Director of Leonardo’s Helicopter Division, and the entire Savoia Marchetti Historical Group underscored the importance and prestige of the event and our virtual experience. Following its success during the ceremony, the application has now become a permanent installation at the Volandia museum in Somma Lombarda, ready to welcome aviation enthusiasts of all ages.
