THE CHALLENGE
A VR adventure for the Centenary of the Italian Air Force
On the occasion of the Centenary of the Italian Air Force, Dead Pixels was tasked with creating an immersive Virtual Reality experience to commemorate the Decennial Air Cruise that took place in 1933.The main goal of the project was to allow the user to personally relive the exploits of a pilot from that era and experience an important chapter in Italian aviation history aboard the Savoia-Marchetti S.55X seaplane, a symbol of the golden age of flight and the absolute protagonist of the legendary first transatlantic crossing.

THE SOLUTION
Digitally reconstructing the legend of the S.55X
We used state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the city of Sesto Calende and Lake Lisanza, the historical places where the legend of the S.55X was born. Following the guidelines left by the engineer Marchetti and using 3D modelling software, we faithfully reproduced the aircraft with an exceptional level of detail, maintaining its authenticity. To make the experience even more immersive, numerous photographs from the era were collected and processed, allowing us to virtually bring back to life the protagonists of this historic feat with the aim of guiding the user during the virtual experience.
THE RESULT
The project becomes a permanent installation
The project was presented to the public during the Air Force’s Centenary celebration ceremony in Sesto Calende, with the participation of the President of the Lombardy Region, the managing director of Leonardo’s Helicopters Division, and the entire Savoia Marchetti Historical Group. The success of the event led to the application becoming a permanent installation in the Volandia museum in Somma Lombarda, ready to welcome aviation enthusiasts of all ages.
